About Guessmith

Guessmith is a free daily word puzzle you play in your browser. Every day there is one hidden five-letter word, the same for every player, and you have six guesses to find it. Type any real word and the tiles change colour to show what you got: teal for a letter that belongs exactly where you put it, pink for a letter that is in the answer but needs to move, and grey for a letter the answer doesn't use. Use those clues to narrow the possibilities until the whole row turns teal.

Each puzzle takes a few minutes, which makes Guessmith a good fit for a coffee break, a commute or the first thing you do in the morning. The answers are everyday English words, not obscure dictionary oddities, so the puzzle is about reasoning rather than vocabulary trivia. Your guesses can be any valid five-letter word, including less common ones, and the on-screen keyboard keeps track of which letters you have already ruled in or out.

Repeated letters follow simple, consistent rules. If your guess contains a letter twice but the answer has it only once, only one of your tiles lights up: a tile in the right spot always takes priority, and any extra copy is shown in grey. If the answer really does contain a double letter, both copies will light up once you place them. Knowing this lets you test for doubles on purpose, which is often the key to the trickiest words, the ones where four letters are solved and several different endings still fit.

The heart of Guessmith is the streak. Solve the daily puzzle on consecutive days and your streak grows; miss a day or run out of guesses and it starts again. To keep a busy week from wiping out a long run, Guessmith has streak freezes. You earn one free freeze for every seven days in a row, you can hold up to two, and a freeze is used automatically to cover a day you miss. Your statistics page shows games played, your win rate, your current and best streak, and a chart of how many guesses your wins usually take.

Missed a day, or finished today's word and want more? The archive holds every past Guessmith, laid out as a calendar. Pick any date to play that day's puzzle. Archive games are a separate track: they never break or extend your streak, so you can catch up on a whole month without any pressure, and the calendar marks each day as solved, missed or in progress so you can see what is left.

When you finish, the share button copies a spoiler-free result: the puzzle number, how many guesses you needed and a small grid of coloured circles that shows your path to the answer without giving away any letters. Paste it into a group chat and compare your morning with friends who played the same word.

Good Guessmith players tend to think in two phases. The first one or two guesses are for gathering information: words with five different, common letters reveal the most. After that, every guess should be a real candidate that fits everything you know. It is tempting to type the first word that comes to mind, but pausing to count how many words still fit, and choosing a guess that splits them apart, is what turns a five-guess day into a three-guess day.

For players who want more of a challenge there is hard mode, where every clue you uncover must be used in later guesses: a letter found in the right spot has to stay there, and a letter known to be in the word has to appear again. If you get properly stuck, you can reveal one letter of the answer with a hint. A colour-blind option adds a shape to every clue tile, and the game follows your device's light or dark setting, or you can choose one in the settings.

Guessmith runs on phones, tablets and computers with nothing to install and no account to create. It loads in a moment, works with the on-screen keyboard or a physical one, and saves your streak, statistics and archive progress automatically in your browser. A new puzzle unlocks at midnight in your own time zone, and a countdown on the results screen tells you how long until the next one.

Tips and strategy

  • Start with a word that uses five different common letters, such as one with two vowels and R, S, T, L or N.
  • Don't spend guesses on letters you have already ruled out. The keyboard greys them out for you.
  • A pink letter tells you where it isn't as much as that it's there: try it in a new spot next time.
  • Remember that letters can repeat. If you are stuck with one spot left, consider a double letter.
  • If you can only think of one word that fits, check that it uses every clue before you press Enter.
  • Play early in the day so a busy evening can't break your streak, and keep a freeze in reserve for holidays.

Frequently asked questions

Is Guessmith free?

Yes. Guessmith is completely free to play in your browser, with nothing to download and no account to create.

When does the new puzzle come out?

A new Guessmith unlocks every day at midnight in your local time zone. The results screen shows a countdown to the next one.

Does everyone get the same word?

Yes. Every player gets the same word on the same date, so you can share your result and compare with friends.

How do streak freezes work?

You earn one streak freeze for every seven days in a row, and you can hold up to two. If you miss a day, a freeze is used automatically and your streak carries on.

Can I play past puzzles?

Yes. Open the archive (the calendar button) to play any previous day's puzzle. Archive games don't change your streak or daily statistics.

Is my streak saved?

Your streak, statistics and archive progress are saved automatically in your browser on this device. Clearing your browser's site data resets them.

What is hard mode?

In hard mode every clue you find must be used in later guesses: letters found in the right spot must stay there, and letters known to be in the word must be included. You can switch it on in the settings before your first guess.
