Turf Rush
Draw loops to capture land, cut rival trails and own the biggest share of the map in a fast territory .io game, online or against bots.
About Turf Rush
Turf Rush is a territory game in the .io style: a busy square map, a crowd of rivals and one simple goal, which is to own more of the ground than anyone else. You start on a small square of land in your colour. The moment you step off it you begin to draw a trail behind you. Steer back onto your land and the trail closes into a loop: every cell inside that loop, and the trail itself, becomes yours. A short trip grabs a strip, a bold trip around open ground grabs a whole field. Each round lasts three minutes, and when the timer runs out the player holding the most land wins.
The danger is the trail. While you are outside your own land it stretches behind you like a thread, and if any other player touches it, you are out. That works in your favour too: run across a rival's trail and they are eliminated, their land is wiped from the map and the space opens up for whoever grabs it first. You also lose if you cross your own trail, if you steer into the edge of the map, or if someone captures every last cell of your land. Two players who meet head on settle it by position: the one who is out on a trail loses, and if both are, both go down.
That simple set of rules creates a constant push and pull between greed and safety. Every step away from home makes your next loop bigger and more rewarding, but it also makes your trail longer and gives rivals more of it to cut. Good players watch the minimap, notice when a rival is far from home, and time their raids so they can strike and get back before anyone reaches their own thread. Land can be taken from other players too. Draw a loop that crosses into someone else's colour and the enclosed part becomes yours, so the biggest player on the map is also the biggest target.
The controls are deliberately small. Your player always moves, one cell at a time, and you only choose where to turn. On a computer you can steer with the arrow keys, with W, A, S and D, or simply by moving the mouse: your player turns along the grid towards the cursor. On a phone or tablet you swipe in the direction you want to go, anywhere on the screen, and one L-shaped swipe makes two quick turns. Turns are queued, so a fast double tap lands on two consecutive steps, and a turn straight back into your own trail is ignored instead of ending your run.
Press Play online and you join a live room with up to sixteen people from your part of the world. Computer players fill the empty seats so a round is always busy, and they step aside as more people arrive. Every room runs the same rules on the server, so what you see is what everyone sees, and your own turns show on screen the instant you press. If your connection drops, the game puts you back into a room on its own. Prefer to practise first? Press Practice against bots for a private arena with nine computer players. Some play it safe with small, careful loops, others take big risks and chase your trail across the map. If you are eliminated during a round you can jump straight back in with a fresh square of land, and the round carries on around you. Your best share of the map, your round wins and your most eliminations in a round are saved in your browser on this device, with no account needed.
When an optional video ad is available, the elimination screen also offers a bigger restart: watch the ad and you come back with a much larger square of land, which makes it easier to climb back up the leaderboard. It can be used once per round, you never have to watch anything to play, and the button only appears when an ad is actually on offer. Between rounds you may sometimes see a short ad, never more often than every few minutes and never in the middle of a round.
Turf Rush is free, loads in a moment and works on phones, tablets and computers. The map is drawn crisply at any screen size, the camera follows you smoothly, and a live leaderboard and minimap show who owns what at a glance. A round takes three minutes, which makes it a perfect quick break, but it is hard to stop at one: there is always a rival to cut down and a bigger loop to try. Start with short trips, learn how far you can safely wander, and then see how much of the map you can paint before the clock runs out.

Tips and strategy
- Keep your first loops small. A long trail is a big target, and an early loss costs more than a slow start.
- Check the minimap before a long trip. If a rival is close, grab a smaller strip and get home.
- Loop along the edge of your land rather than straight out from it, so you are never far from safety.
- Watch for rivals who wander far from home. Their trail is long and they need many moves to get back.
- Bite chunks out of the leader's land. Any loop that crosses into their colour moves those cells to you.
- In the last seconds, a safe loop that finishes beats a huge loop that is still open when time runs out.
Frequently asked questions
Is Turf Rush free to play?
Yes. It runs in your browser for free, on phones, tablets and computers, with no download and no account.
How do I capture land?
Leave your own land to draw a trail, then steer back onto your land. The trail and everything it encloses becomes yours, including any of a rival's land inside the loop.
What eliminates me?
Another player touching your trail while you are outside your land, crossing your own trail, running into the edge of the map, or losing all of your land to other players' loops.
Am I playing against real people?
Yes, when you press Play online: you join a live room with other people, and computer players fill any empty seats. Practice against bots gives you a private arena instead. If the server can't be reached, the game starts a practice round so you can still play.
What happens when I get eliminated?
The round carries on and you can play on straight away with a fresh square of land. When an optional ad is available you can watch it once per round to come back with a bigger square.
Where are my records saved?
Your best share of the map, round wins and most eliminations are saved in your browser on this device. Clearing your browser data removes them.
