About Block Plonk

Block Plonk is a free block puzzle game for your browser. The idea takes five seconds to learn: three shapes wait in the tray under an 8x8 board, and you drag each one into place. Fill a whole row or a whole column and it clears with a satisfying pop, freeing up space for the next shapes. When all three shapes are on the board, a fresh set arrives. The game ends when none of the shapes in your tray fit anywhere, so the real puzzle is keeping enough open space for whatever comes next.

There is no timer and no gravity. Blocks stay exactly where you plonk them, and you can take as long as you like over every move. That makes Block Plonk a calm game to play on the bus or between meetings, but also a surprisingly deep one. Every placement changes which shapes will fit later. A neat board with long open lanes can take a five-block bar or a 3x3 square; a board full of single gaps cannot. Good players think a whole tray ahead, choosing the order of their three shapes so that each one sets up a clear for the next.

Scoring rewards ambition. Every block you place is worth a point, and every line you clear adds a bonus. Clearing two, three or four lines with a single shape is worth far more than clearing them one at a time: one line scores 10, two lines 30, three lines 60 and four lines 100. On top of that comes the combo. Clear lines again within three placements of your last clear and your combo grows, multiplying the value of every new clear. Keep the streak alive for a whole tray or two and the points pile up fast. Empty the board completely and you earn a Perfect bonus of 300 points.

There are thirteen families of shapes, from single blocks and dominoes to L shapes, T shapes, zigzags, long bars and the chunky 3x3 square, in 41 different orientations. Shapes never rotate once they are dealt, so you have to find the spot where each one fits as it is. Early on, every set of three shapes is checked before you see it, so there is always at least one way to place all of them. As your score climbs, bigger shapes turn up more often and the dealer is a little less generous, which is what eventually ends a game. When that happens you can play again straight away, or, where ads are available, watch a short optional ad once per game for a fresh set of pieces that are guaranteed to fit.

Block Plonk is built to play well everywhere. On a phone the shape you are dragging floats just above your finger, so you can always see where it will land, and a soft highlight shows the rows and columns it is about to complete. On a computer you can drag with the mouse or play entirely from the keyboard: press 1, 2 or 3 to pick a shape, move it with the arrow keys and press Enter to drop it. The game loads in a moment, keeps working if your connection drops mid-game, and needs no download or account.

Your best score is saved on your device, and so is the game in progress. Close the tab in the middle of a run and the board, the tray and your score will be waiting when you come back. Sound effects are generated in the browser, rising in pitch as your combo grows, and can be muted with one tap. If you enjoy logic games with simple rules and endless replay value, Block Plonk is a great way to spend five minutes, or an hour chasing a new high score.

Phone and tablet

Tips and strategy

  • Plan the whole tray. Before placing the first shape, check that the other two will still fit afterwards.
  • Keep at least one long open lane. It is the only place a five-block bar or a 3x3 square can go.
  • Avoid leaving single empty cells surrounded by blocks. Only the smallest shapes can fill them.
  • Set up two lines at once. Clearing several lines with one shape scores much more than clearing them separately.
  • Protect your combo: if a clear is possible this turn, it is usually worth taking even if it is small.
  • Work from the edges and corners inward, and keep the middle of the board as open as you can.

Frequently asked questions

Is Block Plonk free?

Yes. It runs in your browser for free, with no download and no account.

Can I rotate the shapes?

No. Shapes are placed exactly as they are dealt, which is part of the challenge. Early in a game every set of three is checked so that all of them can be placed.

How does the combo work?

Each clear that comes within three placements of the previous one raises your combo by one. Clear points are multiplied by the combo, so a long streak is worth a lot. Three placements without a clear reset it.

Is my score saved?

Yes. Your best score and the game in progress are saved in your browser on this device, so you can close the tab and carry on later.

What happens when I run out of room?

The game ends when none of the shapes in your tray fit. You can start a new game straight away, or, when ads are available, watch an optional ad once per game for a fresh set of pieces that fit.
